By the Numbers
Western New England University has a rich history that dates back to 1919 when it was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, as the Springfield Division of Northeastern College, known then as Springfield-Northeastern. It was created to provide part-time educational opportunities for adult students in law, business, and accounting.
In 1951, the school became independent and was granted the ability to confer degrees in Business Administration and Law. With this change, it adopted the name Western New England College. A few years later, in 1956, the college moved to its current home on Wilbraham Road.
Fast forward sixty years to July 1, 2011, when Western New England College officially became Western New England University. The name change better reflected our growth, diversity, expanded graduate programs, and evolution into a comprehensive university. The main campus has expanded from its original 34 acres to 215 acres, containing 28 major buildings and numerous athletic and recreational fields.
